Character Recalibration in the Trenches of Initiation
November 23, 2022 — New Moon Astrology
This article series charts the transformation of consciousness over time, through the rise and fall of Lunar light — from the New Moon to the Full Moon and back.
This particular installment refers to the chart for the new moon that occurs on November 23, 2022.
In my opinion, the most interesting feature of this chart is Jupiter turning direct almost simultaneously with the conjunction of this new moon. Jupiter has been retrograde since July 28 and it dipped back into Pisces on October 28, 2022.
Jupiter stations direct with this new moon and begins a new 12-year cycle by entering Aries on December 20, 2022, just a day before the Winter Solstice.

A profound point of contrast to highlight from this chart are the competing motives of civilization and nature.Civilization can be seen as a centralizing force whereas nature is individualizing. Similar but different, with competing motives.
The Inner Planets and the New Moon
All four inner planets — Sun, Mercury, Venus, Moon (Moon is an inner planet at the new Moon) — are within 9 degrees of each other, in the first Decan of Sagittarius. This first 10 degree segment of Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, which further emphasizes all things Jupiter.
Mercury and Venus are compelling this young new moon to higher-value distinctions that support cultural growth. The conflict between what we make up our minds to do and what culture mirrors back to us are calling us to think more deeply about who we’re really responsible to and what we’re really responsible for.
We are learning to think for ourselves — to let our thoughts be guided by solutions based on hope, rather than on outcomes prescribed and compelled by power and leverage — and take inspired action from the value of our own perspective.
This benevolent self-aware perspective recognizes mortality and channels its energy into that which helps the Next Generation. The position of the inner planets to Pluto reminds the mature mind that change is inevitable.
Are you acting from your understanding of universal truths accessible by all of Consciousness, or are you acting in retreat out of fear of others’ power?
It’s essential to absorb the upgrades you are receiving into your visions for your larger purpose. Accepting the upgrades mindlessly, without vision, invites larger forces to make decisions for you without your consent.
Visions become agendas, and agendas will crystallize at the new moon in December (12/23).
Not only is Jupiter transiting direct during this segment of the lunar sequence, but Neptune is also stationing direct, which it does on December 3.
The fact that Jupiter stations direct first, suggests to me that personhood — who we are becoming — leads to cultural change. The task is to focus on the person you want to become and create society from that intention, rather than letting society tell you how to be who you are.
Pluto’s Double Sextile
Pluto is the great cultural alchemizer. It’s receiving a tight waning sextile from the new moon conjunction and it’s interacting with an exact waxing sextile that bisects Jupiter and Neptune.
This double sextile formation with a trine between the outer two sides of the sextile (sun/moon and Jupiter/Neptune) helps to stabilize rebirth within the individual and the collective.
This is especially important in the United States of America because the United States is going through its first Pluto birthday. This is the last New Moon before Pluto transits the United States’ natal Pluto.
Post retrograde shadow elements related to authority and achievement are likely to reveal themselves across culture throughout 2023.
The lower, more personal octave of Pluto — Mars — is retrograde, in a biquintile aspect (144°) to Pluto. This suggests that latent power is being developed.
Uranus
The nature of individuality within culture is being resculpted (Uranus) by insights and technologies. The task, in my opinion, is to not resist this resculpting, but to revel in the spirit of the struggle for power.
From your place of personal balance (previous Libra new moon), and with your connection to awe (previous scorpio new moon), what reflections, connections, and extensions do you perceive?
The more holistic, broad, and inclusive your awareness, the more fully you’ll be able to integrate the lessons learned that Jupiter is receiving over these next few weeks (before Jupiter re-enters Aries).
These lessons could easily refer back to the last time Jupiter transited through the end of Pisces (first half of 2010) and into Aries, from June 2010 to June 2011.
What larger behavior patterns are you subconsciously taking on?
Continue to learn, refine and listen for the best, sturdiest, and most meritful ideas to be proven and accepted through January 22, 2023, when Uranus stations direct. Tests of character will prove your posture.
Stand balanced and poised, which is not the same as armed and hypervigilant. Your capacity to access your inner calm fortifies your character.
We’re ready to move forward with new understandings, but don’t create new paradigms out of spite or revenge for what didn’t work last time (Jupiter post-retrograde shadow).
Intentionally and consciously:Observe → Understand → Respond
The shadow of that energy is:Project → Blame → React
Rediscovering Yourself
Mars in retrograde reminds me that we’re being repolarized through March, when Mars goes direct. If you’re feeling filtered or throttled, you’re probably resisting repolarization.
Redress your need for action into dedication to reinvigoration. Allowing yourself to be reinvigorated repressurises your potential and fortifies your character. This upgraded character will be tested when Mars goes into Cancer next spring, from March 25 to May 20, 2023.
In Summary
This is a time for believing in the power of the human spirit, your own human spirit, rather than a permissioned administrative state. A new phase of initiation is becoming clarified and taking shape. Create visions of the future that grow your soul. Find your place by listening to your heart’s desire.
Deepen your commitment to lessons learned and let plans be inspired by a fighting spirit, committed to reaching the light at the end of the tunnel (your vision).
Recognize the contrast between connection and differentiation. It will empower your discernment to make strategic alliances. Express as you breathe with benevolence, empathy, and confidence.
May new paths forward be carved by illumined minds that solve systemic problems, rather than divisive dictators shouting from the rooftops.
