Take Your Education Into Your Own Hands

The Opportunity of a Lifetime

Archeological records from the Smithsonian show that human babies, homo sapiens, have been basically the same for the last 300,000 years. The world changes faster than biology can adapt.

A newborn baby has the innate sense to look for its mother’s darkened nipples to draw sustenance for the first time. At our last breath, we’re encouraged by our loved ones (if we’re so lucky to go out surrounded by those who made our lives most meaningful) to ‘go into the light.’

From the moment we’re born until we die, we’re learning, growing, and adapting to the world we find ourselves in.

The contingency is that we must be paying attention. Where our attention goes, our life force flows. Whatever you’re paying attention to is what your life becomes.

The more you pay attention to what happens in your world, and your own thoughts and reactions to those happenings, the more opportunities you have to learn something.

We are not here to have our perspectives validated for the sake of our fragile egos. We are not here to tell our teachers they are correct because they are our teachers. We are here to challenge ideas, experiment and develop new understandings of the world and the greater universe.

The whole purpose is not to affirm the students’ preconceived notions, but to train them to test their assumptions in safe ways that let them see farther into the world and deeper into the unknown.

No teacher can teach a student who’s unwilling to learn. The student must be ready, willing, and self-motivated. Shiny-star-stickers and other forms of external reinforcement are, at best, encouragements to confidence. They show the student that they are on the path desired by the teacher. They don’t mean anything in and of themselves.

The teacher can help show the way and clear any roadblocks to a students’ safe passage, but the student must take the steps themselves.

Learning is an inside game. We must be willing and eager. We must take the steps on our own.

The opportunity of a lifetime is to engage in the process, take the necessary steps, and expand into the people we are capable of becoming.
